Coffin action for 47 people executed in Saudi Arabia
Location: Amnesty International Ireland
Time: 12.45-2.00
Date: 2 February
Saudi Arabia executed 47 people in a single day on 2 January. We must protest against this utter disregard for human rights.
Shi’a Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, was among those executed. He was convicted after a political and grossly unfair trial.
Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr had been a vocal critic of the Saudi Arabian government His killing in particular suggests they are also using the death penalty in the name of counter-terror to settle scores and crush dissidents. With the exception of the Sheikh and three Shi’a Muslim activists, the others were convicted of involvement with al-Qa’ida.
